Newly Admitted International Students

ManualsISSS looks forward to welcoming all admitted international students to the University of Mississippi. In this section, you will find steps that are both necessary for your enrollment at the university and helpful as you prepare for your student visa application and travel to the U.S.

This information pertains to those students who are coming to the university as undergraduate or graduate students.

STEP 1
Access your WebID and reset the password. As an admitted student, you should receive an email with your WebID asking you to reset your password. Your WebID will be used throughout your time at the university for processes such as applying for on campus housing, course registration, acceptance of scholarship awards, viewing grades, etc.

STEP 2
Turn in the necessary documents related to your intended visa classification to International Student and Scholar Services.

  • F-1 and J-1 students must show proof of sufficient finances before an I-20 (F-1 students) or DS-2019 (J-1 students) can be issued by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The I-20 or DS-2019 must be presented at the U.S. Consulate when applying for a student visa.
  • Those who will hold a status other than F-1 or J-1 must submit a copy of their I-94 or other document that shows what status they will hold.
  • A copy of the passport information page is requested for those who intend to hold F-1 or J-1 status

STEP 3
Students will be sent electronic access to their form I-20 (F-1 status) or DS-2019 (J-1 status).

FAQ about I-20 fields:

Passport Name: This is not a required field and is typically blank

Admission number: This field is not used and schools do not even have access to enter data here. It is correct for it to be blank.

Major: The response to this field is not one that schools type. Schools select from a standard list of codes called the Classification of Instructional Programs(CIP) which may or may not match the exact wording of what the school calls the program. The university matched its programs to the appropriate choice on the CIP list and the ISSS office must use what the university has chosen.

STEP 4
Pay the SEVIS fee and apply for a U.S. visa. Visit ISSS’s Obtaining a Student Visa page for more information about the visa process.

STEP 5
Submit proof of required immunizations. Visit the University Health Services page for information about which immunizations are required and how to document having received them.

STEP 6
Make Housing Arrangements. Visit ISSS’s Housing page for more information about your housing options.

STEP 7
Make plans to attend the International Student Orientation program and the Undergraduate or Graduate School orientation.

STEP 8

ISSS’s will provide shuttle service from the Memphis International Airport to Oxford on the official arrival day.  On this day you will be greeted at the Memphis International Airport by Ole Miss staff. You will then travel by shuttle to Oxford where you will be escorted to your pre-arranged housing. This official arrival day shuttle service must be arranged 4 weeks prior to arrival.
