Undergraduate Application/Admission Requirements

(For international students interested in earning a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi.)

Application Requirements

  • To be submitted online:
  • To be submitted by mail:
    • Official transcripts/degree certificates (must be official or officially certified, and must include an English translation) of high school education and any universities/colleges ever attended.
      • Students who have completed at least 10 transferable courses at the university level (equivalent to 30 credits in the USA) are not required to submit high school transcripts.
      • If your transcripts and diplomas are in languages other than English, you must provide a translation.
    • Copy of English language proficiency scores (exceptions apply!)
    • Affidavit of financial support and official bank statement required at time of application submission.
    • Copy of passport identification page(s), if available
    • [International Student Transfer Eligibility Form]. May be submitted later, and is required of F-1 and J-1 visa holding students who are transferring to the University of Mississippi from academic institutions within the USA only!
  • To be submitted directly by the Testing Center:
    • Official English language proficiency test scores
    • Official SAT/ACT scores (only required of international students who graduate from high schools IN THE USA!)

Note: Though an SAT or ACT score is not required for admission  for students who were educated outside the US, international students who intend to seek a degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, and other physical science disciplines that require registration in Calculus 1(Math 261) in their freshman year, must meet the following requirement:

Cambridge O Level International Examination (Math) or equivalent with a passing grade of C or higher, or minimum ACT Mathematics score of 25 or minimum SAT Mathematics score of 580.

Those students who reside in countries where SAT, ACT, or Cambridge are not offered, will have the option to take the prerequisite courses to satisfy the requirements mentioned above.  Those students conditionally admitted to the IEP Program will have the option to take the prerequisite classes once they satisfy the English proficiency requirement.

Admission Requirements:

1. For Full Admission to the University:

    • For International Freshman students who intend to graduate from a high school outside of the USA:
        • Academics:
          • 3.00/4.00 cumulative high school grade point average, or higher, on a university preparatory curriculum.
          • Additional requirements apply to those applying to International Studies, Honors College, Public Policy Leadership, Manufacturing Excellence, and the Arabic Language Program.
        • English Proficiency – minimum:
          • 6.00 IELTS, or
          • 79 TOEFL-IBT, or
          • 53 PTE-A
          • Exceptions apply. See English proficiency requirements below.
    • For International Freshman students who will graduate from a high school in the USA:
        • Academics:
          • Same requirements apply as they do to U.S. freshman applicants.
          • Additional requirements apply for those applying to International Studies, Honors College, Public Policy Leadership, Manufacturing Excellence, and the Arabic Language Program.
        • English Proficiency – minimum:
          • 6.00 IELTS, or
          • 79 TOEFL-IBT, or
          • 53 PTE-A, or
          • Have completed all 4 years of high school in the USA
          • Exceptions apply. See English proficiency requirements below.
    • For International Transfer students interested in transferring to the University of Mississippi from a college/university outside of the USA:
        •  Academics:
          • Minimum 2.50/4.00 cumulative grade point average on all university/college courses completed.
          • Students who have completed less than 10 transferable courses at the university level (equivalent to 30 credits in the USA) must provide evidence of having earned a 3.00/4.00 cumulative high school grade point average, or higher, on a university preparatory curriculum (if graduated from high school outside of the USA).
          • Additional requirements apply for those applying to International Studies, Honors College, Public Policy Leadership, Manufacturing Excellence, and the Arabic Language Program.
        • English Proficiency – minimum:
          • 6.00 IELTS, or
          • 79 TOEFL-IBT, or
          • 53 PTE-A
          • Exceptions apply. See English proficiency requirements below.
        • World Education Services – Course-by-Course Evaluation. REQUIRED FOR UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER CREDIT
          • A WES (World Education Services) evaluation is required of students who wish to receive undergraduate transfer credit at the University of Mississippi for any courses previously completed at a college/university (post-secondary education) outside of the USA.
          • In addition to submitting official transcripts of all course work completed at the higher educational level to the University of Mississippi, students must also arrange for their official transcripts from college/universities outside of the USA  to be submitted to WES.
          • While such an evaluation is not a requirement for admission per se, it is a requirement for the granting of undergraduate transfer credit at UM. You will find all the information you need at www.wes.org.
          • You can apply for your evaluation on the WES website, and should apply for the course-by-course evaluation. It is critical that you read and follow the “Required Documents” information specific to your country of study to ensure that your evaluation is completed as quickly as possible.
          • If your transcripts and diplomas are in languages other than English, you must provide a translation. Please make sure that University of Mississippi is listed as one of the recipients of the WES evaluation. Once all the required documentation has been received by WES, the evaluation usually takes 7 – 10 days.
          • (If you have not completed college/university (post-secondary) courses at an institution located outside of the USA, a WES Evaluation is not required.)
    • For International Transfer students interested in transferring to the University of Mississippi from a college/university within the USA:
    • International Freshman/Transfer applicants graduating from a secondary school or transferring from a college or university in the U.S., whether in Mississippi or elsewhere, must meet the admissions requirements as listed in the section titled Admission of Freshman and Transfer Students in the University of Mississippi catalog.  http://catalog.olemiss.edu/admission/international-students  Additionally, they must provide:
        • Academics:
          • Minimum 2.00/4.00 cumulative university or college grade point average. 
          • Additional requirements apply for those applying to International Studies, Honors College, or Public Policy Leadership.
        • English Proficiency – minimum:
          • 6.00 IELTS, or
          • 79 TOEFL-IBT, or
          • 53 PTE-A, or
          • Have completed two university-level composition/writing courses with each grade B or higher.
          • Exceptions apply. See English proficiency requirements below.

2. For those with  English proficiency scores slightly below requirement:

  • Students who meet the application and academic admission requirements as listed above, but who score slightly below the required English language proficiency requirement, may nonetheless be “admitted with IE90/91”.
  • This admission status implies that students may be admitted to undergraduate study at the University, and that they must take one English for International Students course during their first semester of enrollment (and until successfully passing the courses), while also taking other academic courses.
  • This option is not currently available for those needing F-1 student status.

3. For Conditional Admission:

  • Students who meet the application and academic requirements as listed above, but who do not meet the English language proficiency requirement for “Full Admission” or “Admission with IE90/91” may be “Conditionally Admitted”
  • If you wish instead to be considered for Conditional Admission to the University of Mississippi, please contact the Intensive English Program directly.
